THE ART

It’s been a joy working with the World of Eric Carle, bringing a collection of prints from The Very Busy Spider to life for the very first time.

The World of Eric Carle, with its bold and brightly coloured collages of animals, coupled with Carle’s intuitive understanding of child psychology, creates a beautiful collection of prints, perfect for nurseries as standalone pieces or gallery walls. The only challenge is deciding on your favourite(s)!

THE ARTIST

Eric Carle (1929 – 2021) was born in New York to German parents, although his family returned to Germany when Eric was only six years old. At the age of 15, Carle was conscripted by the German Government to dig trenches on the Siegfried line; despite the difficulties of living in Germany at that time, Carle completed his schooling and studied graphic art at Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. Eager to return to the United States, Carle returned to New York in 1952 to pursue a career as an artist.

In 1963 Carle left his full-time job at The New York Times to work freelance and focus on art. He met children’s author Bill Martin, Jr., who encouraged Carle to experiment with illustration. In 1967 they published their first collaboration, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, a colourful repetitive book that became a bestseller, particularly in the United States. In 1968 Carle published his first self-written and illustrated book, followed shortly thereafter by the award-winning book which brought him global acclaim: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Carle’s books are loved by millions of families for their brightly coloured pictures, created with his painted tissue-paper collage technique, and playful elements such as holes “eaten” through pages, creating an interactive experience which had never been explored before. Above all, it was Carle’s intuitive understanding of child psychology which allowed him to create entrancing stories to delight generation after generation of children.

THE PRINT AND FRAME

The print is framed by hand in Cambridgeshire in the UK, using only European sourced PEFC™ and FSC approved woods. Frames are Fine Art Trade Guild accredited which means they meet strict conservation standards and are built to last for generations to come.

We use Clarity+ glazing which is a high-quality acrylic glass alternative, offering high UV resistance which doesn't yellow over time, is not easily scratched and is safe for use in children's bedrooms.

Your framed print will arrive with D-rings and cord already attached, ready to hang right out of the box.

DIMENSIONS

Including the frame, with mount, the medium framed print is 45cm wide and 45cm high.
