Although Anthony Browne wrote and illustrated around forty titles, he also produced work as an illustrator only, perhaps his most notable being Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (for which Browne was highly commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal and won the Emil prize).
The 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It has been illustrated numerous times since its first publication and our collection includes prints from Sir John Tenniel (1865), Arthur Rackham (1907), W. H. Walker (also in 1907) and Anthony Browne (1988), all of which beautifully depict Carroll’s menacing dream world using themes of whimsical menace and cataclysm.
Anthony Browne was born in Yorkshire. After studying at Leeds Art College, Browne worked as a medical illustrator and illustrator of greetings cards, before publishing his first book in 1976. Browne’s breakthrough came in 1983 with the publication of Gorilla, which earned Browne the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal (which he went on to win a second time with Zoo).
In 2000 Browne was awarded the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Medal, an international award given to an illustrator for their body of work. Browne was the first British illustrator to receive the award.
Anthony was the Children's Laureate 2009 - 2011 and used his time in the post to raise the profile of picture books and picture book illustration, as well as the value of supporting children's creativity and imagination.
