THE ART

It’s been a privilege curating a collection of framed prints from ‘We’re Going On a Bear Hunt,’ the timeless classic and essential feature for any child’s first bookcase. This beautiful series of prints can only be found at Ralph & James.

We're Going On a Bear Hunt. We're going to catch a big one. Will you come too? For over thirty years, readers have been swishy-swashying and splash-sploshing through this award-winning family favourite.

The book famously pairs Michael Rosen’s rhythmic words, based on an American folk song, with Helen Oxenbury’s lovingly painted watercolours which make beautiful framed prints for children’s bedrooms or nurseries. Oxenbury’s illustrations are based on her own children and dog, making their way through the Suffolk mudflats where her family have a boathouse.

We love the story of how this classic picture book was created: with Rosen famously giving Oxenbury a free rein to illustrate the book however she saw fit: Rosen explaining the imagery “all comes from Helen's imagination: it's nothing whatsoever to do with me. I enjoy and admire the book almost as an outsider.”

THE ARTIST

Helen Oxenbury was raised in Suffolk. Her father was an architect and at an early age she developed a passion for drawing, going on to attend the Ipswich School of Art as a teenager and then the Central School of Art and Design in London, where she met her future husband, John Burningham (another award winning author-illustrator with whom she collaborated with on ‘There's Going to Be a New Baby’).

During her 50 year career as one of the UK’s best loved author-illustrators, Helen has illustrated classic picture books such as Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes, Farmer Duck and, most famously, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (written by Mem Fox, Martin Waddell and Michael Rosen respectively).

THE PRINT AND FRAME

The print is framed by hand in Cambridgeshire in the UK, using only European sourced PEFC™ and FSC approved woods. Frames are Fine Art Trade Guild accredited which means they meet strict conservation standards and are built to last for generations to come.

We use Clarity+ glazing which is a high-quality acrylic glass alternative, offering high UV resistance which doesn't yellow over time, is not easily scratched and is safe for use in children's bedrooms.

Your framed print will arrive with D-rings and cord already attached, ready to hang right out of the box.

DIMENSIONS

Including the frame, with mount, the medium framed print is 82cm wide and 45cm high.

The medium print itself is 72cm wide and 35cm high.
