THE ART

It’s been a joy curating a collection of framed prints from ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea,’ the mischievous classic and essential feature for any child’s first bookcase. This striking series of prints can only be found at Ralph & James.

The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don't expect to see at the door is a big furry, stripy tiger! This classic story of Sophie and her extraordinary teatime guest has been loved by generations of children since it was first published over fifty years ago.

Judith Kerr’s magical story is coupled with her instantly recognisable, clear and expressive illustrations, which make beautiful framed prints for children’s bedrooms or nurseries. We also love the ambiguity of the book: although many attempt to interpret the tiger in different ways, Kerr has repeatedly insisted the tiger represents nothing more than… a tiger!

THE ARTIST

Judith Kerr (1923 – 2019) was born in Berlin. At the age of 10 her family fled for Switzerland as the Nazis came to power, eventually settling in Britain in 1936. During the Second World War, Judith worked for the Red Cross, helping wounded soldiers, before being awarded a scholarship to study at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and becoming an artist.

Kerr is best known for her classics The Tiger Who Came to Tea (1968) and the MOG series which began with MOG the Forgetful Cat (1970). As well as young children's books, Kerr wrote children's novels such as the semi-autobiographical Out of the Hitler Time trilogy.

Kerr was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to children's literature and Holocaust education.

THE PRINT AND FRAME

The print is framed by hand in Cambridgeshire in the UK, using only European sourced PEFC™ and FSC approved woods. Frames are Fine Art Trade Guild accredited which means they meet strict conservation standards and are built to last for generations to come.

We use Clarity+ glazing which is a high-quality acrylic glass alternative, offering high UV resistance which doesn't yellow over time, is not easily scratched and is safe for use in children's bedrooms.

Your framed print will arrive with D-rings and cord already attached, ready to hang right out of the box.
