The art

This joyful collection of prints from the classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are will delight the imaginations of young and old alike.

Where the Wild Things Are follows a young boy named Max who, after dressing in his wolf costume and creating mischief, is sent to bed without his supper. Max's bedroom transforms into a jungle, before he sails to an island inhabited by frightening beasts, the Wild Things. Max is hailed as the king of the Wild Things, but before long begins to feel lonely and decides to sail home. The book ends wonderfully with Max finding his supper, still hot, left for him by his forgiving parents.

Upon its release, Where the Wild Things Are attracted criticism for its grotesque characters, with many psychologists claiming the book would traumatise young children. Over 50 years later, the book is a true classic, having sold tens of millions of copies and winning numerous awards including the Caldecott Medal, a special honour for children's book illustration.

The artist

Maurice Sendak (1928 - 2012) was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrant parents. Sendak himself described his childhood as a "terrible situation" due to the death of members of his extended family during the Holocaust. His love of books began when, as a child, he developed health problems and was confined to his bed; his inspiration to then become an illustrator came at the age of 12 after watching Walt Disney's film Fantasia. Sendak was an illustrator for other authors, before in 1963 writing and illustrating Where the Wild Things Are.
